34 AutoMill HP ™ P R O D U C T M A N U A L EN 5. Maintenance 5.1. Changing Saw Blades NOTE Check the saw blades for sharpness weekly. Check the carbide cutting edge for loose, chipped, or missing carbide tips. If necessary, use solvent on blades to remove pitch buildup. (Follow proper Safety Data Sheet guidelines when working with the solvent.) NOTE Replace the saw blades when the cuts appear torn and jagged. Cuts should be clean and smooth. Have the saw blade re tipped if carbide tips become chipped or come off the blade. ! WARNING Dull carbide teeth can increase the load on saw blade motors and may cause premature failure. Dull saw blades can also cause boards, and/or off-fall to be thrown from the machine. A high (fast) conveyor feed rate with dull saw blade teeth can create an unsafe operating condition. ! WARNING Always use NEW bolts and NEW nylon insert lock nuts when performing maintenance on the blade mandrel. 1. Lock and tag out the electrical and air supply in accordance with OSHA procedures (i.e. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147) and put on a pair of heavy leather gloves. 2. Using a 1/2" combination wrench, remove the nylon insert lock nuts on the back of the mandrel. 3. Using a 3/16" hex wrench, remove the flat head socket cap screw blade bolts. 4. Note the tooth direction then remove the old blade. 5. Install the new blade with the teeth in the same direction as noted in Step 4. 6. Using NEW bolts (APN 1968), install the flat head socket cap screw blade bolts and torque to 11-16 ft·lbs. 7. Using NEW nylon insert lock nuts (APN 4128), torque to 11-16 ft·lbs. 8. Perform the following safety check before removing the lockout-tagout. Grasp the blade and try to move it back and forth, pushing and pulling it from the motor. Step 15. If the measured length is short ADD the decimal value found in Step 14 to the Length Calibration value of 48. If the measured length is long SUBTRACT the decimal value found in Step 14 from the Length Calibration value of 48. NOTE Short = 48.00 + decimal value; Long = 48.00 – decimal value. Step 16. Enter the value calculated in Step 15 in the Command Value Box using the keypad. Step 17. Click ENTER. Step 18. Click START Move on the Command Value Screen. Step 19. Click Calibrate on the Axis Calibration Screen. Step 20. Re-cut the same board 3 inches shorter. Check the length and repeat Steps 1 to 19 if further adjustment is required.
