CSA S347-14 The truss plate testing standard has been completely overhauled and is now a true reflection of Limit States Design philosophy, which requires testing of larger number of replicates in order to determine the lateral tooth-holding resistance values of the plates. The truss plate tests now include test requirements for both Standard (Hydraulic) and Roller Press design values. This will appear, as indicated below, in both the Plating Tab in the Job Settings and in the Plating Tab in the Engineering Options. The individual settings will need to be adjusted by the fabricator depending on the type of machinery that they are using to fabricate trusses. If a fabricator uses some form of a "C-Clamp" system, then the "Plate Values" used is the "Standard Presses" design values. If a fabricator uses a form of "Roller Gantry" system or a "Finishing Roller," then the "Plate Values" used would be the "Single Roller Pressed" design values. The other changes to the plate testing standard will allow the ability to develop lateral tooth-holding design values for higher density materials and Structural Composite Lumber. TPIC'14 There are two main areas of changes within TPIC that have been implemented in this version. • Trimmable Overhang options • 4x2 Top Chord Bearing Maximum reaction limits with gaps and at angled walls Trimmable Overhangs There is an option in the Analysis Tab of both the Job Settings and the Misc Tab of the Engineering Options that is labeled "Overhang Moment Relief". The options are either "Force On" or "Force Off", as indicated in the clipped in images below. The purpose of this setting is to give the option within the truss design to allow the overhang to be removable on site and not affect the truss design or the overhang is non-removable. • "Force Off" indicates that the overhang is non-removable • "Force On" indicates that the overhang can be site trimmed 4x2 Top Chord Bearing Maximum Factored Reactions w/Gaps The maximum top chord bearing factored reaction limits w/gaps for lumber on flat trusses that are listed within Table E.2 of the TPIC'14 Design Manual have been implemented into the software. The gaps for 4x2 trusses can be from 1/2" to up to 3.5," depending on which top chord bearing details are utilized within the 4x2 truss designs. The maximum top chord factored reaction limits w/gaps for lumber on flat trusses have also been grandfathered into previous versions of the TPIC Design Manual, which means that they are available for previous versions of the building code as well. Refer to Table E.2 of TPIC'14 for the appropriate changes and the applicable top chord bearing details.
