G O O D CO N N E C T I O N S | W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 4 SOFTWARE TIPS & TRICKS This tip was submitted by Jace Carlson of Manion Lumber and Truss in Pillager, Minnesota. Jace was presented with the sketch shown to the right, which, while having complete dimensions, is missing the angle of the dog leg area. This is a common scenario, but Jace found an easy way to resolve the angle using the tools available within Alpine's iModel. 1 The first step was to create the two horizontal walls that form the anchor points at the corners of the dog leg area. 2 Next, the dog leg walls are added as normal horizontal and vertical walls. In this example, wall dimensions were created by using Auto Dimension and then deleting the unwanted dimensions for clarity. Using Modify Layout allows you to rotate the walls and dimensions at the same time. 4 Modify Layout defaults to using the box select method in order to select the elements to be edited. In this example, we drew the box from the upper right-hand corner to the lower left-hand corner so that the edges of the box intersect with all the walls and dimension to be rotated. 5 Next, click the right mouse button and choose Rotate from the menu. You can also select the Rotate command from the toolbar located at the bottom of your screen. 6 iModel prompts users to select the point of rotation. In this example, the walls are being rotated about the right end of the 18 ft. wall. 3 Click the Tools icon and then click the Modify Layout icon. 7 Next, iModel prompts the user to either enter the angle of rotation or select the point to rotate from. Since we do not know the angle, select the left end of the 24 ft. wall as the point to rotate from. 8 Finally, iModel prompts the user to select the "rotate to" point. In this example, the lower right corner of the 4 ft. wall is selected. The result is that the walls and dimensions are rotated into position. All that remains is to clean up the wall corners in order to eliminate any remaining gaps or overlaps in the wall corners. iModel Makes Adding Dog Leg Angles a Snap Do you know a handy shortcut or have a useful tip or trick to share?
