INSTALLATION ERRORS FOR TOP MOUNT HANGERS Toe Nailed I-Joist Hanger Over-Spread on Glu-lam Header Do not toe nail wood I-joist to headers prior to installing hangers of any type. Toe nailing results in improper hanger installation resulting in gaps and a loose connection, and is a major cause of squeaks. Hanger Not Plumb Top flanges spread wider than the wood I-joist can raise the wood I-joist above the header. This condition can cause squeaky floors. A hanger cantilevered out from the header can also cause floor squeaking.
