7 GOOD CONNECTIONS | Summer 2019 In the spirit of many great structures around the world an iconic guitar hotel tower is under construcŸon at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Designed to resemble back-to-back guitars, with guitar faces, necks and brightly lit guitar strings that reach 450 feet into the sky on both sides, the tower is under construcŸon as part of a $2.5 billion expansion of the resort. It is the flagship desŸnaŸon of the Hard Rock InternaŸonal empire owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. At the base of the guitar is an elaborate 10-acre pool complex that is intended to provide a "Bora Bora Experience" for guests with lagoons, waterfalls and private luxury villas. Florida Quality Truss As part of this massive project Alpine Fabricator Florida Quality Truss in Pompano Beach received a call to help resolve their need for a very unique covered walkway longer than a football field. ALer being told it could not be done by some, Franko Medi led the design, manufacturing and installaŸon of this project. The result was a one of a kind 334' structure that has 522 upper trusses and 376 lower trusses. ALer checking with Alpine's Tim Fernan, Franko partnered his experience and creaŸvity with the flexibility of Alpine's IntelliVIEW design soLware, pushing the limits of radius trusses. The nearly 900 custom trusses were fabricated and shipped for installaŸon. The project hit a few bumps when the onsite contractor did not comply to proper safety procedures. Franko Medi was asked to step into the role of truss installaŸon project foreman and safety officer due to large scope of this project. Adding this to Franko's exisŸng responsibiliŸes resulted in him being onsite for nearly 6 months, with many 15 hour work days while the installaŸon took place. The final result is very unique. Large radius trusses are typically achieved by straight chord segments broken by webbed joints. The Ÿght radius-eaves, required for the flowing Hard Rock walkway, required much more than this. The design flexibility of intelliVIEW, in Franco's creaŸve hands, allowed stacked radius chords to be precisely detailed, engineered and cut to form the desired flowing roof surface. The enchanŸng results of this partnership will be unveiled and on display to the public when the new guitar hotel has its grand opening celebraŸon on Thursday Wednesday October 24, 2019. They said it could not be done...
